Since 1913, Magdalene College has awarded honorary fellowships to distinguished figures in literature and the arts. Among them was Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), who, upon his election in 1932, gifted the College a manuscript poem, To the Companion, honouring Samuel Pepys, one of Magdalene’s most celebrated alumni.
Following Kipling’s death, his widow, Caroline Kipling, further enriched the College’s collection by bequeathing a remarkable volume of handwritten poems. This manuscript contains twenty-eight works, including multiple drafts of key stanzas from The White Man’s Burden and an unpublished fragment titled The Song of the Engine. Many of the poems feature Kipling’s own revisions, offering rare insight into his creative process.
Now published as part of the Cambridge Library Collection, this volume brings Kipling’s manuscripts to a wider audience, making them accessible to scholars, enthusiasts, and general readers alike.
